Vollis Simpson in his workshop. Photo by Mike Dayton |
I’ve always been a fan of destination riding – pick a place
that’s cool to see by bike then ride there and back. One of my favorite
destination spots was Vollis Simpson’s whirligig firm. I was saddened to see
that he passed away last Friday.
Here’s an item from the NY Times about him: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/06/arts/design/vollis-simpson-artist-dies-at-94.html
I was surprised to see how many blog posts I’d done about
whirligigs. I was fortunate to meet Vollis a few times when riding past his
property by myself or with Tim Lucas and others on Tim's whirligig permanent.
Here are previous posts. Enjoy and the next time the wind is
blowing you around, remember that was always the perfect day to ride past
Vollis’s place…
