A Fellow Rider Goes Down...

It’s always discouraging to hear that a friend and fellow rider has crashed -- in this case Ed Pavelka, who rode for a while in our North Carolina brevet series. Ed fell and broke his hip during Susan Notorangelo and Lon Haldeman’s PAC Tour.

The good news is that he’ll apparently make a full recovery.

The former editor of Bicycling and the brains behind the weekly e-newsletter, www.roadbikerider.com, Ed is something of a cycling celebrity. We nudged each other anytime he showed up at the start of our local brevets. We were in awe of how many training miles he seemed to work in each week.

I had the pleasure of riding with Ed on one of our 200Ks -- at least for the first 45 miles, when I lost his wheel as we crested a hill. It was fun while it lasted, and as we rolled along, we talked about … well, bikes and biking, two topics we both love.

I also had the pleasure of interviewing Ed for American Randonneur where we talked about the astonishing growth of randonneuring in the U.S. Click here for the full story.

Ed, we’re pulling for you and hope to see you back on the road soon.
