<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; line-height: 1.2; white-space: pre-wrap;">Nine riders set off into the early morning fog. Nearly a full day later the same nine finished in a very different early morning fog. The inaugural running of the Asheville/Damascus/Asheville 3 state 400k (255 miles) chose one of those perfect days for a long ride. Just a little warm in the sun. Just a little cool in the shade. Little fluffy clouds punctuated an otherwise Carolina blue sky. A slight breeze cooled the peloton on the many climbs and never impeded progress. Despite the many sharp edges of the elevation profile and 18,431ft of climbing riders came from as far away as Washington DC and south Georgia. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; line-height: 1.2; white-space: pre-wrap;">The course did not disappoint those traveling efforts. Four sustained climbs broke up some really enjoyable quiet valley riding. The route out followed the French Broad River into Marshall where the climbing began. We made our way through the East Fork area and up and over Grapevine. </span></div>

It turned out that the slight uphill through Shady Valley could be ridden in the 12-14mph range and the long challenging climb up to the AT in the midday sun was now not nearly as bad from the north in the later afternoon. Seven riders scattered into 4 different restaurants in Johnson City TN while two pushed on. This section was new to us, as we had not seen it on the way out. We entered with a powerful hunger. Unfortunately we walked out 30 minutes later in the same state having had nothing more than chocolate milk, water and a coffee. The staff has been working through some issues. It seems that the cook has been recently overwhelmed when too many orders are placed at the same time. So now orders line up like planes at a busy airport patiently waiting for their turn to be called out and prepared. Our patience ran out and after two of our counter-sleeping compatriots were roused we rolled out with sloshing bellies of liquid concoction. This is where a few of us started to feel a bit nauseous. I'm no PBP expert but I have completed three and I really
love the event. I hope to be lining up with 5,000 or so of my closest friends
this coming August. Dreams lead to plans. I'm sure others are planning their
PBPs. I like the formula we fell into last go around and hope to use it again. Stop
pretty much everywhere that has food and see how things go. My target was a
finishing time beyond 88:55 but alas came in a wee too fast. No worries, there's
always the next ride. <o:p></o:p></div>

I was hoping to post a qualifying time for la Société Adrian
Hands. To gain admittance one must complete PBP in a time of 88:55 or greater. This
is the time that Adrian Hands established by completing PBP in 2003. One
hundred and two years earlier Charly Miller entered his 56:40 into the Great
Book. To gain entry into la Société Charly Miller one must complete PBP in
56:40 or less, and be an American.<o:p></o:p></div>

As expected, a quick inventory of the membership of each
group shows no overlap. The societies are polar opposites of one another. There
is no rider in la Société Charly Miller and la Société Adrian Hands. Charly
Miller is for the fastest of the fast. Adrian Hands is for the more
chronologically relaxed. Charly Miller is for American riders. Adrian Hands
accepts riders of any nation. Both societies agree that PBP is a necessary rite
of passage. Since qualification occurs during a very well attended event,
eventually someone will belong to both groups. <o:p></o:p></div>

I'm sure there will be no argument when I propose that it is
more difficult to gain entry into la Société Charly Miller. The list only
numbers 45 qualified riders as compared to 78 for la Société Adrian Hands. The
first dual citizen will likely come from the Charly Miller list but that is not
a given. In 2011 LSAH member Branson Kimball attempted a Charly Miller time on
a fixed gear. He came up short on that particular ride but he is definitely
capable of a very fast time. Perhaps with gears he could be the first. I heard
that Tim Bol a Charly Miller member was looking for a more relaxed ride in
2011. He posted an 88:51. The clock can be cruel. I don't know his intentions
but he obviously has the palmares to be the first on both lists. An LSAH rider
who has a legitimate chance in 2015 is Bill Russell. He gained Hands entry with
his 89:17 in 2011 but since then has switched to a velo mobile and has been in
the habit lately of posting very fast brevet times. Control opening times
figure more into his ride plans then closing times. Perhaps 2011 Charly Miller
inductee Bob Brudvik will decide to sample the local fare with his new riding
buddies from NC and join la Société Adrian Hands in 2015. Of course lining up
at a start time other than the 90 hr one prohibits a chance for entry into
LSAH. <o:p></o:p></div>

I have the great pleasure to ride with some very good riders
that are on neither list but could be on both. Mike Dayton, Mark Thomas and Dan

take it easy. As Mark likes to say, "we'll start off slowly and back off
from there." That is the kind of mantra that posts an 88:55 plus. The last
person that I might mention as a strong possibility for both Charly Miller and
Adrian Hands has it in his bloodline, Ian Hands. In 2011 he recorded a perfect
88:55. I wouldn't be surprised to see him post a 56:40 sometime. He has it in
his legs, although he might not have the desire to race through PBP. Not enough
time to meet everyone. Ian, you could always finish fast and then ride back out
onto the course to ride in with your buds. Look for us at a café.<o:p></o:p></div>

When we will have the same name on both lists? My guess is
2015. Let's all go to Paris just in case this is the year. Wouldn't want to
miss that.<o:p></o:p></div>

I struck out on a new perm,
Sunset Boulevard, a 260K roll from Raleigh to Sunset Beach. I’m about 130 miles
in, getting within striking distance, when I see the sign:<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">

Well, hell, if you ride North Carolina backroads in the summertime, you know what that means. A bridge being replaced, oh, you betcha. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Here’s the point where you do some soul searching. Do you feel lucky punk?
Well, do ya? Because if you can’t make it across, you got 3 miles down to have a look. Then 3 miles back to where you are right now.
AND THEN you gotta follow the detour for several miles. That's some serious heartbreak, right there.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I grab a seat on a soft patch of concrete and have a look at
the likely detour on my iPhone. It looks like a crap alternative on a
couple busy roads. Maybe good for cars, not so much for me.</div>

Okay, let’s roll the dice. I head out, an easy pace but
pretty uneasy about what I’m going to find. If I’m wrong, it’s going to cost me
an extra hour.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So okay, I’ve already given away the punch line. But here’s
how it unfolded. About halfway down, I see a guy on a riding lawnmower. He sees
me and waves, so I stop and ask: <o:p></o:p></div>

We talked about PBP a lot on this weekend's 600K. I guess I'm not the only one dreaming of next year's event.<br />
<br />
FYI, our NC anciens / anciennes are planning to host a ride / meeting in early 2015 for any riders heading to France for their first PBP. Stay tuned for details....<br />

North Carolina's permanent choices keep growing. One of my new favorite's is Mick's 108 <a href="http://www.rusa.org/cgi-bin/permview_GF.pl?permid=2122" target="_blank">Bunn Wash Caper</a>, which rambles through towns north and east of Raleigh, including Spring Hope and Bunn. The route is highly recommended. Lots of farmland and lots of small town flavor, but watch for the dogs at the first info control and as you enter Spring Hope, a half-mile past the Devil Dog Manufacturing facility. Maybe they keep some of the product local.<br />
<br />
There's a local restaurant in Spring Hope and a Subway in Bunn, so you have food choices along the way.<br />
<br />
I rode solo on Sunday and with new RUSA member Ken Bowers (<span style="background-color: white;"># 9563)</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #003399;"> </span>on Monday. He completed his first RUSA event.<br />
<br />
Ken works in Raleigh's planning department and he's a great guy to talk to about the city's future growth. And the things ya learn: Ken was a guitarist in <a href="http://www.rhapsody.com/artist/vanilla-trainwreck/album/sofa-livin-dreamazine" target="_blank">Vanilla Trainwreck</a>.<br />

I love Raleigh’s 400K route through the Uwharries, but I’ve
ridden it many times, and I was in the mood to see some new asphalt. So last
Saturday I joined Tidewater RBA Keith Sutton and recumbent rider extraordinaire
Jacob Anderson for the workers ride of the upcoming <a href="http://www.tidewaterrando.com/">Suffolk 400K</a>.<br />

The real ride goes off
this weekend at 6 a.m. Be there or be square.<br />

All in all, a great day on the bikes. This ride and
this region deserve your attention.</div>

<b>Roads.</b> If you
like quiet rural roads with virtually no traffic, you’re gonna love Dr. Keith’s
route. Have a look at Keith and Jacob zooming by on Beef Road....not to be confused with nearby Barley Road. Clearly, the folks in this part of the world have a good sense of humor or they love soup.<br />

Otherwise, get ready
for mile after mile after mile of quiet country lanes. I cannot recall ever
riding such a long route with so few cars. A tip of the hat to the route
planners. Did I mention it was windy? Check out the trees in the above animation.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Virginia has never met a road it couldn't chip and seal, and you’ll see lots of it
on this course. If you have 28 or bigger tires, bring em. We saw a few
potholes, mostly in the first 25 miles and around Franklin, where roads get
heavy use from logging trucks heading to the paper mill. Roads on the North
Carolina side don’t have the English lane feel of the Virginia ones, but they
were equally pleasant.<o:p></o:p></div>

<b>Terrain.</b> The terrain
is flat east of I-95, and features gently rolling hills on the west side of the
interstate, from mile 70 to mile 125. The biggest lumps are around Lake Gaston.
There is nothing very demanding. <o:p></o:p></div>

<b>Wind.</b> If the
prevailing wind is out of the west, and it often is, you’ll have headwinds
until Lake Gaston, around mile 100, and tailwinds for much of the return trip.
With any luck, the wind will come up in the afternoon and give you a push home.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
<b>Food / water.</b> There are waffles to be had in Boykins, at the first control, and there are plenty of dining options in other towns along the way, with lots of fast food choices and a few local eateries. The landscape is dotted by convenience stores. Even at night, we were never more than 25 miles from an open market.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Highlights.</b> The
paper mill in Franklin is not to be missed – it’s just too big, frankly, and
that telltale smell gives it away. We passed through several towns that were
new to me – Boykins, Enfield, Murfreesboro and Ahoskie, where a helpful police
officer actually ran interference for us as we exited. <o:p></o:p></div>

Most of the riding is in the Tidewater region, and you’ll cross
several cypress swamps. Those are my favorite kind of swamps because the trees
look spooky until they’re turned into wood paneling. As for swamp creatures,
Dr. Keith just about got a real snake bite, as opposed to the tire kind, when
we passed through one wetland.<o:p></o:p></div>

You’ll definitely want a picture at the Post Office in

Did you
know Enfield once had the world’s largest raw peanut market? No? Well then,
you’re welcome.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Way back when Enfield also had a riot going on. From
Wikipedia:<o:p></o:p></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
One of the most
significant historic events in this small rural town was the Enfield Riots,
which helped spark American Independence. The Crown governed the area, and
Robert Earl Granville, heir of John Lord Carteret, possessed land rights in the
district. The riots were set off by a controversy over corrupt agents, land
grants, titles, and the collection of quitrents (which often ended up in
Granville’s pocket). A group of Colonists -- many of them land owners and
office holders from Halifax, Edgecombe and Granville counties -- went to
Edenton on the night of January 25, 1759, and kidnapped Francis Corbin and a
co-agent, Joshua Bodley. Corbin and Bodley were brought to Enfield, where they
were thrown in jail for four days and forced to open all land records for
public inspection. Corbin returned illegal fees he had collected, but he filed
a lawsuit against his abductors after his release.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
The suit was eventually
dropped, but the Colonial Assembly jailed some of the men who had kidnapped
Corbin and Bodley. A group of citizens in Enfield expressed outrage against
British tyranny and on May 14, 1759, broke into jail and freed the men. It is
thought that the actions of these rioters probably encouraged Willie Jones and
the other radical leaders of North Carolina to push for independence from
England through the Halifax Resolves of April 12, 1776.</blockquote>

Every once in a while you meet special people who are way
damn smarter than the rest of us. I met Tim Pons at UNC-G in 1974. We both
liked John Lennon and lots and lots of Budweiser. I helped him build the
pyramids of beer cans that lined his dorm room walls. He was irreverent, rebellious.
He could sniff out bullshit from across the room, and he was the kind of guy
who would call you on it. He helped shaped
my world view, and I like to think that was mutual. I somehow
convinced him to take up bike riding, and he and I had a big adventure doing a tour
to Virginia Beach. Years later, when we discussed that trip, I was astonished to hear him recount all of the details, down to the name of the guy who put us
up and bought us beer halfway through.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And yes, he was smart. How smart wasn’t immediately obvious
to his friends, but I guess his professors in neurobiology recognized it. They packed
him off to get a PhD at Vanderbilt, and he eventually landed a
job at the National Institute of Health doing brain research and adding to the
understanding of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_limb">phantom
limb phenomenon</a>, showing that the brain can reorganize if sensory input is
cut off. <o:p></o:p></div>

Tim later became a professor at Wake Forest University. He
died on this day in 2005 from complications from liver disease. <o:p></o:p></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUb2xuG3L8fEfjFWGnDeix3opw1SXGLlkvyvj5F7FdsT4mGPfSh4KFpb472ySQmyF9VtbM3Va2A0ncWssAxeezRDfnQE7otYLntOvdiecJ8k0ewuPgugp5bPccWp4pd7yTzhN1uKluHn2O/s1600/eureka.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUb2xuG3L8fEfjFWGnDeix3opw1SXGLlkvyvj5F7FdsT4mGPfSh4KFpb472ySQmyF9VtbM3Va2A0ncWssAxeezRDfnQE7otYLntOvdiecJ8k0ewuPgugp5bPccWp4pd7yTzhN1uKluHn2O/s1600/eureka.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
This may be the most startling roadside historical marker you'll ever see in North Carolina. We passed it yesterday on Al Pacer's <a href="http://www.rusa.org/cgi-bin/permview_GF.pl?permid=1771" style="background-color: white;">Pacer 200</a> permanent, which runs from Zebulon to Greenville, NC. The sign is at the halfway mark in Eureka. I mean, EUREKA!<br />
<br />
Aside from the very cool name and the adopted nuclear family, Eureka is like a hundred other small towns in North Carolina, with boarded-up businesses on the main street and convenience stores anchoring the corners and a collection of junked construction vehicles and cranes at the local salvage yard, just outside the town limits, and a few charming wood frame homes on the side streets.<br />
<br />
I've been here before. Buddy Dan did his first ever century to that town so he could finish up and shout "Eureka!" Except he was too tired to do much shouting. But the town is good for those kinds of moments.<br />
<br />
Back to that historical marker. You can tell it was written by a committee and edited by some boss up the food chain. Crisis averted? That doesn't really do justice to what happened about a half century ago. The sign should read: HOLY CRAP! WE JUST ABOUT GOT VAPORIZED!<br />
<br />
The story began when a B-52, in distress and heading to the nearby Air Force base in Goldsboro, d<span style="font-family: inherit;">isintegrated in mid air and fell out of the sky while carrying two nuclear warheads, crashing into a nearby tobacco field. Three of eight crew members lost their lives, with several ejecting to safety. </span>The crash site is actually in nearby Faro, but Faro is just a road and a turkey farm or two, so Eureka got the sign.<br />
<br />
The "two thermonuclear bombs <u>each had enough power to leave a crater a third of a mile wide and exterminate all living things within 8.5 miles of its ground zero."</u> And guess what? One of the damned things was a jostle and a bump away from exploding. Here's more from Wiki:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Three of the four arming mechanisms on one of the bombs activated, causing it to execute many of the steps needed to arm itself, such as charging the firing capacitors and, critically, deployment of a 100-foot-diameter (30 m) retard parachute. The parachute allowed that bomb to hit the ground with little damage....</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
The second bomb plunged into a muddy field at around 700 miles per hour (310 m/s) and disintegrated without detonation of its conventional explosives. The tail was discovered about 20 feet (6.1 m) below ground. Parts of the bomb were recovered, including its tritium bottle and the plutonium.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
According to nuclear weapons historian Chuck Hansen, the bomb was partially armed when it left the aircraft though an unclosed high-voltage switch had prevented it from fully arming. In 2013, Lt. Jack Revelle, the bomb disposal expert responsible for disarming the device, recalled the moment the second bomb's switch was found. “Until my death I will never forget hearing my sergeant say, 'Lieutenant, we found the arm/safe switch.' And I said, 'Great.' He said, 'Not great. It’s on arm.'"</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Excavation of the second bomb was abandoned as a result of uncontrollable ground-water flooding. Most of the thermonuclear stage, containing uranium, was left in situ. The Army Corps of Engineers purchased a 400 feet (120 m) circular easement over the buried component. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill determined the buried depth of the secondary component to be 180 feet (55 m), plus or minus 10 feet (3.0 m).</blockquote>
So basically, there's still a nuke buried out there under the cotton field.<br />
<br />
In September, the <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/interactive/2013/sep/20/goldsboro-revisited-declassified-document" target="_blank">Guardian newspaper published declassified documents</a> that showed we were one faulty switch away from a nuclear catastrophe.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.ncmarkers.com/Markers.aspx?MarkerId=F-70" target="_blank">official essay about the Eureka marker</a> is worth a read.<br />
<br />
And there you have it. Eureka: the little town with one of the most celebrated "oh shit!" moments in history. And with a nuclear bomb buried in its backyard to back up the claim... Eureka! Widespread disaster averted....<br />
